My biggest problem in Vegas

Arrived at airport about 8:45 on wednesday to meet my dad and brother for a long weekend of gambling and drinking. My bag didnt arrive on my flight but it came a few hours later so that was not a problem. $25 cab ride to the Venetian. Nowhere in the world surely does a cab ride cost so much as Vegas. Anyway only 1 game going about 10am. I got a good deal on a special rate $99 per night Wed and Thurs. I really like the Venetian anyway, probably my favorite place to stay.

I decided to walk over to Caesars because I had dreams of winning the high hand for a seat to the Caesars Palace Classic main event. (mon, tue, wed in sept high hand of the day wins $10,000 seat) There is ONE ring game going at 1030am and the high hand is already 10 high straight flush. WTF??? Anyway they opened a new game within 15 min, played about 1.5 hr down about 50. The room is big and set apart from the whole casino so it is very quiet, probably too quiet. I was the only person drinking at my table, but I just got into town and didnt want water.

Went back to Venetian for lunch and poker. Venetian poker room is amazing, but if I had to find something wrong I would say it is too big. From the middle tables, you are a long way from the TVs and I cant see good anyway. Played about 3.5 hours for a small profit and started smashing beers. I always know when it is time to quit when I go from bud light to corona, but usually dont. Stopped to eat and went back to somehow donk away $200, sad to say dont remember how. Walked over to TI prob about 2am and donked off a few chips for about an hour, at this point I am about 26 hours awake and sleepy. TI was fine but I am surely not as crazy about it as most on here, but anyway it was 2am.

Next morning not much action at Venetian again so went across the street to mirage. Very tight boring game left after a couple hours. The theme so far is small pocket pairs, at least 15-20 times, cant flop a set. Finally hit a set with 1010 and have to fold on the turn to some dude who has made a flush like 3 of the last 4 hands. Played a little at the Wynn and started drinking Patron margaritas on the rocks (smart). Played about 3.5 hours -$90. at this point I am beginning to question everything about my play, but hell the drinks were great. Back to Venetian and continue the tequila. played several hours and managed to go broke playing like a drunk fool. Surely my AQ is good on a AJx flop. HA! I guess the drink service was good.

Friday check in at Wynn on the poker room rate, $199 fri and sat with 6hrs play per day. You just have to play 12 hours total over your stay and you can combine hours from everybody staying in the room. Anyway I will never check in without the $20 trick, I didnt even think about it at the time. The room at the Wynn was embarassingly small. Two TWIN beds in about 600 sq ft room. I realize using the poker room rate doesnt get you a special treatment, but holy **** this was crazy. Anyway played my longest session ever, from 245pm friday until about 630am sat. Finally took a nap about 10am for about 1 hr. Anyway got my 12 hours out of the way.

While watching what I drank, I had a good time at the 1/3 game. Dont let anybody tell you they like the $3 chips they are LYING. Even the dealers get confused (count # of chips, not $ amount.) My brother got a buffet comp and I asked the floor person for a line pass. I dont really like buffets but it was free so whatever. I was actually pretty good for a buffet however. Anyway after 14+ hours called an all in reraise with AKs and ran into AA but only lost about 150 there. Yup, it is time to go, about +150.

Saturday just wanted to watch college football all day. It sure is hard to get a drink in the Wynn sportsbook, and the only take drink coupons. I made a $100 bet and a $50 bet and asked if it was enough for a drink coupon he said no but still game me one, a******. Somebody told me (prob not true but anyway) that Steve personally interviewed the cocktail servers when they opened. They are either beautiful, great body, or both. I think he must have done the same with the people who work the sportsbook there, they are ALL unfriendy, no sense of humor, and just rude.

Anyway the hogs got rivered by alabama, so I am in a terrible mood. Anyway played about 3 hours and got a litle sleep before going home sunday morning.

summary:
good - patron, wynn cocktail servers, wynn pool scenery
bad - playing poker too drunk, wynn rooms, $3 chips, razorbacks football

Going back in Oct and staying at Bellagio, and I will definately try the $20 or maybe even $50 trick.

  1. Nice report. I hope your $25 cab ride was including a big tip or else you got really screwed. To go from the airport to TI, which is a little longer, I always have a fair of 13.50 to 14.50. Didn't think Wynn would have such small rooms, good to know.

  2. The NY NY sportsbook drink service is great. Got plenty of drinks with no bets.

  3. Yes I hate the $3 chips as well. I get so confused betting that I just use the number of chips like how you mentioned in your post. Nice report and better luck in the future!

Btw, the beds are actually European full size beds. They advertise queens in the double rooms but they are not quite as big as some other hotels.

  4. The beds at the Wynn are small but very comfortable...

Any suggestions on Vegas cab rides to Venetian, etc. I dont believe anything cab drivers say about the "quickest" route....

  5. Some locals may be able to help more but I recall the best route being Paradise to Sands and you can enter the V from the back. Can't see it being more then #14 for two from the airport.

Shortest route by driving distance: Swenson to Harmon, west on Harmon, 2 blocks to Koval, Koval straight to Venetian back door.

Going the "quick way" through the tunnel and onto the interstate is about twice the distance considering you have to go south, west, north, east, south just to get to the V whereas locals way is just straight north and you dont' have to cross the strip twice like you do in the "quick way (screw the tourist)" route.

  7. Koval is your friend. Hehehe.

  8. I thought the rooms at the Wynn are very good. They are not suites like the Venetian so it is tough to compare the two. I think the Wynn is more high end.

  9. Patron for free ... that's why I love the Venetian!! Great report!

P.S. I hear ya on the sports investments teh past two weeks ... brutal.

  10. How the heck did you get a $99 room rate for the Venetian? That's amazing! Are you one of their VIPs or something? Since I love their poker room, that would be my preferred place to stay. But since all I ever see are rates of $200+, I always end up staying at TI or the Mirage.

  11. You will bve surprised what the Venetian will send you for rates. I just stayed at the Venetian for two nights just a little bit over that. You can get some good rates.

  12. "...the Hogs got rivered by Alabama"

Kentucky beat us on the turn; Hogs folded on the river.

    Nice trip report.

Agreed, it took me about a half hour to stop trying to figure out the amount I wanted to bet and just start counting chips instead. Still managed to book a nice $700 win over two sessions of less than 3 hours each.

It's a confusing game, but it was nice and soft (at least for my small sample size, anyway).
