Vincent Vega - "it's the little differences"

I spent about 5 hours at the Ho-Chunk casino in the Wisconsin Dells yesterday. As Vincent says they have the same stuff, but it's just a little different.

They had three tables running, 2-4, 1-2 no, and rather surprising to me a 6-12 round/round. The round/round is their term for a mixed game; odd in my experience. Another player had told me they had omaha, hold'em, and stud, but he wasn't confident at all.

I only play limit hold'em or stud years ago; there were no seats available on any table. I put my name on the 2-4 list, the 3-6 limit list hoping a table would open up, and I also put me name on the 1-2 no since I just wanted to play and didn't have much time.

They started a new 1-2 no shortly afterwards, 100 min, 300 max. I bought in for $200, among a mix of 100, 200, and 300 buy-ins.

They played with $1, $2, and $5 chips. I've only played no limit in a $0.10-$0.25 home game, but the $2 chip seemed odd and was a little annoying, imo and I presume odd.

They had no wait staff in the poker room! Odd for sure. They did have two soft drink fountain machines like in a self-serve McDonalds feet from the tables, which was great! No tipping needed, no waiting for your drink, good selection of drinks, all free.

They also had restrooms and a full bar feet from the tables. The alcohol was not free! Odd again. I like to drink, but not at the poker table, so I was very pleased with the drinks and wait staff arrangement.

No smoking tables, but smoking was allowed at the bar, again feet from the tables. Oh well.

I won't post any real interesting hands - I didn't get a lot of good cards. I lost a chunk of money here and there on miscellaneous yet solid hands. I won three all-ins, 2 for $46 each and one for about $300 when I flopped broadway (KQ) in late position and a live player stayed with my betting/raising all the way to my all-in pre-river. He had AQ, needing a K for a split pot; he missed.

The live player above was up $1200+ when I left. He was playing anything and everything. Raising at any time, never knew what he was on. Hitting tons of hands. He rivered an open-ended straight on my AQ top/top. He didn't have pot odds, but it wasn't an awful call, I lost a hundred that hand.

Ultimately I finished up about $170. Pleased with my first foray into no-limit. I always thought I'd play with scared money, but I felt plenty comfortable.

I'll probably play more no-limit, but suspect I'll still consider myself a limit player.
Had a good time, all players were good people.

Anyway, plenty of little differences at Ho-Chunk, mostly good imo.

No idea where this post belongs, so it's here, and I had to check some room, no "other" option, so MGM, where I like to play gets the check.

  1. Nice report from a room that I think most of us have not been to!

The Red Rock Casino plays their 1/2 NL with $2 chips (and the usual $1 and $5) as well. It doesn't really affect the play, but it definitely is a little different.

  2. Yeah, I probably wouldn't have even bothered with the report, but they had such a number of unique things, like no wait staff and no free booze, that I figured it would be of some interest.

  3. a lot of the casinos in oklahoma are the same way, they have a few places with fountains that you can get a drink yourself, they have a waitstaff but you have to pay for your drinks (Vegas and Louisianna have spoiled me!!!).

I would think the casino in the dells would be ripe with tourists since that is how the Dells makes their money. Glad to see you came out ahead

At least half the people (probably a good chunk more) that sat with me were "locals". At least local in that they lived within 60 +/- miles and played there often. Many knew eachother.

Many of those locals did not appear to be too good either; not that I'm all that qualified to judge at least w/r to no limit.

The couple tourists that sat near me were not good either, but not horrible. They lost their buy-in somewhat quickly and were replaced by more locals.

I did play on a weekday from about 1-7 PM. The tourist crowd (beside me) might be golfing, waterparking etc. during those times though.

  5. I was at Wisc Dells mid June for a family reunion. My bro and I snuck over to Ho-Chunk to check out the pokerroom between waterpark with the kids and dinner. We knew we didnt have time to play but were hoping to go back later when the kids/wives went to bed. We got there around 6pm on a Tuesday. Had 2 tables of 1-2 NL with a short waiting list. Also had a table of 4-8 Omaha Hi Lo with a 1/2 kill. Since that table was short with 6 players, I couldnt resist jumping in when some of the players were coexing me to play as I was railbirding. Told them I'd sit for literally a few minutes as I knew we had to get back to the family for dinner. I played 2 rounds and left up $100. Good cards and just betting the river took some nice pots. Never got to go back that night but wish I could have
