The outside of the Pompano Poker Room looks like some throwback para-mutual from the 1970s, but inside the ornate decor and the high ceilings give the place a feel of a high class social club. It's a great atmosphere for poker playing and much nicer than the offerings that I am use to in Central Florida.
I was here during the Florida State Poker Championships and it was packed. That day's tournament was a $75 buy-in and 470 participants.
I played the $2-5 NL cash game and our table was replenished all afternoon with new players as people busted out of the tourney. The field was a mix of gamblers and solid percentage players and therefore opportunities were there if you were playing the right cards.
I didn't bother with a player's card or get anywhere near a high hand of the hour. The dealers were running a tight game and polite to the players. The cocktail waitresses were stretched pretty thin with the tourney, but I was able to get some water when I needed it. I didn't try the food.
Because I was passing through on my way to Hollywood, I was only able to play for 3 hours, but the experience was such that I plan to return when I make it back to the area.
