Friday to Monday poker blitz
Arrived at the airport Friday night, 11pm Vegas time. Was on my first table at the MGM Grand ($3-$6 limit) by 1am. Minimal wait, and I fell in love with this room.
A twelve hour session later, I was up $190.
Liked MGM so much, went back Saturday night.
Still a great room, but the Saturday night late night drunks were a challenge to both endure and play against. Some $4-$8, some $3-$6 and more losses than I would like over another 12 hour session(-$120).
During the day/early afternoon, the locals seemed to move in. The games got noticeably more difficult and much *much* tighter.
My only real complaint about the MGM is the chairs are not the greatest. They seem to lean too far back from the table, which makes you slump forward too much. Tough on the back over a really long session.
Sunday, had to spend some quality time with the fiancee, so I did not play... but we toured around. Checked out Binions. While it looked a bit like a dive, they have tournaments going constantly, including rarely found NL SitNGos. If you want to dip your toe into live tournament play, Binions is definitely a place to go.
Also stopped in Wynns, which received some good reviews from the locals I spoke with over the weekend. Looked like a nice room. Very similar to Bellagio in many respects. Will make a point to play there on the next visit in February.
Monday, get away day, wanted to check out a few more places.
Aladdin has a 10am NL Hold em tourney, $35 buy in for 1000 chips, add $5 for 500 more chips.
Todays sold out at 120 players, resulting in a (seemingly slightly low) $1390 first place prize. Top 9 get paid. Lots of first timers.
Blinds start at 25-50 and double every 15 minutes... for a live game (with no automatic shuffle machines) I found this way too fast. You really had to gamble early. Got bumped at the 45 minute mark when my pocket pair lost to a three outer on the river.
Later on Monday, played a quick couple of hours of $4-$8 limit at Bellagio.
Very nice room for the most part.
Lots of people with more money than poker knowledge investing in their poker education.
Two hours and +$120 later, it was time to catch the plane.
One caution on Bellagio... it was one of the few places I saw where you could adjust the height on your chair. I strongly suggest being extremely careful of properly shielding your pocket cards.
Overall, of the places I saw:
- Bellagio - nice games for cash, will definitely revisit
- Binions - have to have a day of tourneys there on my next visit
- MGM Grand - nicest atmosphere by far, but would hesitate to do the 12am-6am shift on the weekends again due to the drunks
- Aladdin - if I did not play there again, I would not feel like I had missed much
- Wynns - Looked worthy of a visit. Well regarded by the locals.
