Getting Sick In Vegas Was Profitable.

Got into town on Wednesday Jan 23rd and checked into the Palazzo. Very nice hotel and the rooms are amazing. I didn’t mind that the casino was dead and I although I was initially concerned that the limits on their table games would be out of scope- they were the same as the Venetian.

I wanted to play the Omaha Tourney at Caesar’s that evening but I just couldn’t leave the Venetian since I was playing and winning at Crazy 4 Poker. The dealer was a total idiot and so was the supervisor since they told me that I didn’t need to play the “Q’s or Better Bonus and the = Bonus!!!” For those who don’t play the game, the Q’s or Better bonus is optional, like the pair plus with 3-card poker. But, the = Bonus is mandatory and it must be equal to the ante. Plus, you only get paid on it if you have better than 2-pair AND the dealer qualifies. I was totally shocked to find the dealer also paying me the = Bonus when the dealer didn’t qualify but I beat him! It was at that very moment the best table game to play in Vegas. I ended up cashing in 2k after I hit a straight flush … I now wish I would have kept playing since it was very difficult to loose but I felt that the straight flush payout may have caught someone’s eye and I better take off before they caught the mistakes… but, I must say that the dealer loved me since he must have made $400 in tips alone when I kept tipping him through the 3 times bet.

Thursday morning I woke up and moved from Palazzo to Caesars (comped room). FYI- I hate all Harrah’s properties not because of the rooms or the staff or anything like that… it’s just that I do not win at Harrah’s properties for some reason??? So, I get a massage at the spa, totally awesome and the girl kicked my butt. I then mozied back to Venetian for the noon tourney. There was a very vocal jerk looking to pick a fight. He was really out of control and started calling people names… nothing too bad; like “super sport” and “tough guy” but it was his tone that was rude. I took about half his chips with a flopped set of 10’s and he didn’t say a thing- thought that was funny. But, later on in the third round he got involved in an UTG All-In for about 1/4 of his chips and there was a player behind him… he was really playing recklessly and his stack was like an elevator in overdrive. He took about 4 minutes and still no action. Finally someone called clock and he asked what that meant… the dealer explained nicely and he said, “I’m not a regular here – I know, but I would appreciate that you explain these things before the game.” Huh ??? Anyway, he called and the player behind him called. He then immediately starting talking to the player behind him and then fired a couple grand. The player pushed on him and then he started getting upset. He then asked if he could show his cards to the player and another at the table said NO. The dealer said that he could not show his cards… again this guy asked and said what if I do show my cards? The Dealer was a little frustrated and said, “Sir if you show your cards, you loose the hand.” This guy did not like that and started yelling and demanding the floor. The floor came and this guy kept saying “I know I’m not a regular, but this is horrible treatment.” I was very happy to see many of the players at the table coming to the rescue to the dealer and it resulted in the dealer being replaced with a very sweet looking grandma-looking woman. Regardless, the guy mucked. I ended up busting out after I flopped tips with A to a river full house. Oh well, I really didn’t enjoy the game after all that drama.

I ate at the Venetian and went back to the room to get deathly sick. WARNING- if you get your butt kicked at a massage one can get sick. I drank a lot of water and kept away from the booze, but it had been about one year since I had a deep tissue and I should have known better. All those toxins released will make you ill- as I was throwing up and bed ridden until Friday afternoon. It was bad.

So, Friday night I did a late check out of Caesars and checked into my comped rooms at Mirage (I go were the free rooms are). I’ve played at the Mirage many times before and I was shocked to find the room packed! I just wasn’t ready to concentrate for a few hours since my head was still clouded from being ill. So, I turned 20 bucks into $750 on video poker and then moved over to Roulette where I hit like no other! I play nickels and turned $200 into $2100 when I hit back to back 32 with $30! Nice hits. Gave back about 1k later throughout the night playing around and then hit the hay.

Saturday morning I was ready to go… felt so much better. Walked over to Wynn and played a 15/30 game. Up about 400 in 2 hours and walked. Went back to Venetian and sat down at a 2-5 No Limit and bought in for $700. Accumulated about 1,100 in 2 hours and ran into A, Ks in small blind (seat 4). Pre flop raise by seat 9 to $40 and I was the only caller. I had a bad vibe about the hand from the beginning for some reason??? Anyway, maybe it shinned through since the aggressor raised me on the flop from my $75 to $250 with a flop of Ad, Qs, 9s. I called concerned about top two pair and I did have that weird feeling. Turn is a 10s and I’ve got a nut flush. I check. He fires $400 and I push… he insta-calls with a Ad, 8s. I took it down and kept thinking to myself what in the hell was he thinking? Oh, I was still a little peaked from being sick and it may have been a false tell or something- LOL. I should get sick more often and play.
I walk a few hands later.

Back to the Mirage and sat down at a 5/10 Omaha 8ob Full Kill game. Had a lot of fun on this one… played for a couple of hours and lost about $100. It’s tough to win or get hurt in that game so it was pure worry-free play.

Sunday Morning I woke up and did a money count to find that I was up about 6k for the trip and decided to eat at the sterling brunch at Bally’s. I hadn't really hadn't eaten anything all trip long and I felt healthy enought to get some good grub. It was absolutely wonderful- the best brunch I’ve ever had but I didn’t realize it was $75. I probably wouldn’t have gone if I knew it was that much, but I do not regret it. I went back to the Mirage to check out and off to the airport. Although there was a couple talking in line for the taxi about how backed up the airport was due to the weather in CA. I decided to call to find that my trip was delayed 3 hours! I turned around, checked my bags and went back to the casino. I sat down at a $5 triple stars machine and hit 15k!!! I love that California weather! I decided to stay the night and really had fun… played everything I wanted with no concerns. Nothing really else happened, nor did it need to. I was up on the trip by over 23k and before I left I set up my next trip with the casino host for May. Got a suite coming my way with 300 in free play in addition to my 40k points and tickets for LOVE. So, I cannot stop thinking if I hadn’t gotten sick and if the bad weather in CA (all the things people DON’T WANT to happen) hadn’t been that I would have lost. I just couldn’t play too much poker on this trip due to my clouded head but it seemed to be a good thing to happen me.

  1. Nice trip. Those deep tissue massages are GREAT. BTW, I was a little confused on your flush. You stated the flop had a Ad and the player had an Ad. Either that was a typo, or it was a bad deck.

  2. Sounds like playing against the house worked out for you!

  3. yes- made a typo or 7... I typed this in like 5 minutes. I had As, Ks and the other player had Ah.

Also, I mentioned to the Crazy 4 Poker dealer at the Palazzo the awsome deal I was getting over at their sister casino. At first she said that it was a promo or something only good for that night (?). Totally BS. After I sat with that dealer for a while and tipped out - she then asked that I didn't mention it to anyone else (yeah right) since many of the dealers graduated from the Venetian over to the Palazzo and they are not seeing the business/players/action they were promised. I thought that was very interesting and a little damning to tell the customer, but it was like 7AM and I was the only fricken player on that side of the casino, so I think she felt a little safe. All In All, I really liked the Palazzo. The service is terrific from check in to check out and the rooms are terrific. The casino must be hurting right now, but they've been open for like a month. Although I just don't see the limits going any higher than the Venetian - I'm sure it will happen eventually but the casino floor isn't anything special - its sort of like one huge room/space with no realy ambiance. Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian and Ceasars all have what seems to be like pockets of space, corners and areas which feels like different rooms. Palazzo dosn't have any of that- just one big room.

  4. Glad you had fun and made a hefty profit.

FWIW, no way the massage made you sick. More likely you picked up a roto-virus at the hotel.

  5. Note to self: Make sure I'm sick before next trip to Vegas! :sunglasses:

Too bad you got sick but seems like it all worked out in the end. Nice wins for a short trip.

  6. I don't know about that.... my sister said that her friend's husband is a massage junkie. He works on a earth mover or something and he gets a deep tissue massage once a month. He has to go for the massage on a Friday because he's sick for the next day or so.

I've always been told to drink a lot of water before and after a massage since the toxins are released into your system and you've got to flush it out. I did so, but like I mentioned... that girl kicked my butt. I've got a feeling that she is the first real massuess I've seen and the others were just "ok." She did say she had a masters degree in physical therapy - LOL. I'm pretty she was "the real deal."

  7. I've got a doctoral degree in Pharmacology and work in biomedical research. I'd be really interested in knowing what "toxins" stored up by your muscles that could be "released" during a massage. Best I can figure is lactic acid. But, I doubt that would do much more than make your muscles sore.

The medical literature does not support the "toxin" theory either.

I stand by the opinion that you picked up some virus on the plane or at the hotel.

Good info ... and wow, a PhD working in biomedical research? AVP sure is an eclectic hodgepodge of a community isn't it? Funny how a game like poker can attract such a diverse group of people.

I used to run reactors and can still quote microscopic and macroscopic cross-sections of absorption for xenon and argon but a PHD, naw

  10. Well- I got sick and maybe it was a bug or something... but it didn't feel like it. I did a google search and this is what I picked up in some rooms. I didn't find anything to say different and although I have no medical backgroud... the last posted exerpt sounds pretty detailed as if the guy knows what he's talking about.

Your nausea is quite normal after a massage. It happens to many people. After getting a massage you should always here theses words "Take your time in getting up".This nauseous feeling is sometimes referred to as a humoral response...it happens naturally. It USUALLY is not dangerous except in the fact that it can mess around in a not so good way with any medications you are taking and sometimes even your blood pressure. That's also why a good therapist will always ask you if you are taking any medications. The sick feeling you have is because of one of the benefits of massage; which is to help to rid the body of toxins, chemicals we ingest, breathe, touch and otherwise absorb into our bodies. When you have the massage these toxins are released "en masse" into your system in readiness for your body to release them by means of its waste; urinating, or having a bowel movement. This same reason is also why after a massage you might often feel an urgent need to go to the restroom to relieve yourself. It is also the reason a therapist will tell you to drink plenty of water after your massage. So yes, the massage likely DID cause the nausea and now you know why.

Greetings Kori, and I am sorry for the delay in answering. One of the things that happen in a massage is that the fluid that surrounds the muscles, called lymphatic fluid, is physically squeezed into the lymphatic ducts. Lymphatic fluid is an important part of the immune system. It begins in the arteries, where it is known as plasma. It "washes" through the muscles and other tissue, where it picks up any dead cells, viruses and bacterium, metabolic wastes (such as lactic acid, the chemical responsible for the burn felt after working out), and any other debris. It then travels to the lymphatic glands, where the immune system, in the form of the killer T cells, begins to eradicate the "gunk". This eventually makes its way to the bladder and bowels and is expelled as waste.

the probable reason for your pain is that the massage was too deep and the muscles were not warmed up properly. While it is not uncommon to feel some soreness after a massage, I feel that anything after 24 hours is too much. It is also very important after a deep massage to drink a lot of water. This extra fluid increases the hydrostatic pressure in the tissues and helps flush out more toxins. The feeling that you were getting sick is not surprising: that is the feeling of the toxins, not yet processed, seeping back into the tissues.

I personally would not return to that therapist. They did not seem sensitive to your needs. I would find someone else, and make sure that you have clear communication about the pressure and depth before the massage begins. That will be the best way to work out the tension you were suffering before, and the added stress of your last massage. A proper massage might leave you feeling a little sore and tired, but you should feel very relaxed and sort of "tingly" all over.

I hope this was of some help, Kori, and please feel free to write with any other questions you have (I'll try to be quicker in responding).

    Sincerely,
    Christopher hall

  11. I got sick reading your report. I've never gotten had a run like that. Happy for you though.

  12. LOL- I did have a great run although I've had some pretty bad trips too. Especially at Harrah's properties... stayed at RIO a few years back and it was the worst loosing experience of my life. I arrived at 8AM vegas and told that I could do an early check in weeks earlier... uhh, Nope. Told I had to wait to at least 1PM. So, now I'm in vegas, can't shower or freshen up and I've got a noon massage- what's one to do??? LOL. Basically, I lost 1500 between 8AM and noon. everything I touched went to crap. hundo in a machine, all gone in 5 minutes- hundo at roulette, gone in 5 minutes, three hundo at 3 card and gone in half hour... need I go on? Anyway, after the massage and check in, the loosing streak continued and the final count down was about 3k in less than 12 hours. It was the weirdest thing since it wasn't that I didn't walk away... because I did. I was walking away from games, taking breaks, grabbing a cool-off drink, etc. It just didn't make a difference and the next morning I packed my bags and moved to the Monte Carlo since they had availability. Never been back to RIO since.
