Highs and Lows of Mid Strip Poker Getaway 7/5-7-8
Arrived LV 8:30am Thursday morning planning to play 4 days and head home. Stayed at Flamingo non-Go room (fine) and was great location-- within 10 minute walk of all my targeted poker rooms. Started with some 2/5NL at Bellagio, played 10 hrs or so ended up a couple hundred+. Had walked around this room a couple times but never played prior to this. Yes, the backs of the chairs at some tables do abut each other in some parts of the room. But, no other room in Vegas, that I've seen, makes you feel like you're really in the thick of the poker scene quite like this place does. All games, all limits, and interesting patrons right up to the Brunson level. Yes, I loved the place. Kept an eye on management after negative comments here but just saw them as very, very busy, not rude.
Friday I strolled over to PHollywood which frankly I would not have done were it not for the positive comments I read on this site. The casino in general is much cooler than the name Planet Hollywood evoked in my mind. I actually liked it better than the Palms, although I don't know about club and pool scene at PH. Anyway, PH runs 3 $60 tournies and I tried the 10am one on Friday. Had a good time but finished just out of the money in 16th place out of 85 entrants. Top 9 made $$. Then went on to have one of the most enjoyable sessions of 1/2nl I've ever had. Finished up $500+ after several hours of play with several WSOP main event players at my table. One kid named Chris who looked 21+ a day who said he'd been written up in CardPlayer and was sponsored by one of the online sites got the worst of it from me for an hour or so. First I caught a series of strong hands which I played fast, then ended up deciding to run a bluff on the next deal regardless of my cards. Flop came all rags w/ 2 diamonds, I bet, then another d on the turn which went check check heads up, river is 4th diamond I bet 75 into 175 or so pot, Chris folds and I show 7h2h. For someone who doesn't run too many bluffs I have to say that was fun.
Had a quick bite to eat then went over to Caesars to check out their semi-new room. Very nice. I bot in short for $200 on 1/2 (probably a mistake) and, maybe playing to confidently and aggressively after my good PH session lost $100 twice playing big slick fast a couple times, both times running into AA. Oh well, still a good day overall.
Saturday went back to PH for 1/2nl and got smoked. Lost two major pots that day. First one definitely a bonehead move on my part dropped $200 or so 3 handed on the river w/ AQ. I had top pair Q kick, on guy on draw but of course other guy had set of 4's. Made crying calls on turn and river, have to give winner credit for playing it pretty well. Other big losing hand not quite so bad. Hero raises to $16 or so first in w/ AdQd. RR'ed to $30. I call. Flop is 3 rags w/ 2 diamonds. Villian bets $100 I go allin for $170 or so. Villian shows KcKd. I'm about 45/55 so I have reasonable pot odds but I don't hit. In hindsight I'd probably fold to the flop bet next time. Lose today about what I'd won the day before. (By the way the buffet at PH is great)
Sunday I'm not emotionally prepared to win/lose $500 again in a coinflip NL situation quite yet so I head back to Bellagio to play some limit. I get on the list for 4/8 and 8/16 and get called first (of course) for 8/16. I haven't played much limit for awhile but it was fun and low-stress, especially after turning a nut-flush and set of K's in the first hour for 2 big pots. Got up $325 or so in an hour and a half, which is huge for this game, and I tightened up for awhile not wanting to give it back. Table I was at was right next to Bobby's room where Doyle, Barry Greeenstein, Eli Elezra(and wife), Gus Hansen (and a couple guys I didn't recognize) were playing what I was told was Chinese Poker. Have to admit I'm enough of a poker geek to think it was way cool to be playing 12 feet or so from those guys, even if they were on the other side of some big glass doors!
Great trip, long red-eye flight home w/ no sleep Sunday night but can't wait to book the next one.
@borgatabud
Now that is a serious cooler! But sounds like a great trip overall, and some entertaining poker to boot. Good report.
Good report. My wife really wish's I had never been shown this site because every time I read a trip report now I start whining about going to Vegas. I've already purchased a small notebook to take with me so I can do my own report. I'm such a nerd.
I'll have to admit though that with your report, a portion of the title is was caught my eye first. This is how my brain processed what it saw when I read the title...
"High's and Lows of mid STRIP POKER getaway..."
Now THAT would be a fun trip report to read. Especially if it also had pics to go with it.
