Many Vegas trips 1st downtown, worst ever
I arrived Friday 9-12-09 at around 4pm. Grabbed a ride from a town car driver for around $40 bucks...
Arrived at the EL Cortez. I got dressed and decided to give the Fremont street experience a shot. The crowd was lame. I entered a sitngo at the Golden Nugget. As I am sitting there I notice everyone in the sit n go is talking about the WPT boot camp class they were just involved in. One of the players was an instructor.
These guys played terribly. The instructor busted out in 7th place. All the students were either really aggressive (going all in with bottom pair or passive just trying to make the money) I have the guy to my right dominated and he hits runner runner 7, 7 to suck out and send my away in 5th place. Oh well thats poker. I went over to Binions and played 1/2 NL for about an hour. After no real memorable hands I have Ad2d and end up flopping the nut flush. I raise $25 I get 2 callers, one raises all in. I call the others fold. I leave up $240ish. I end up messing up my drip bouncing casino to casino downtown playing blackjack and get eaten alive, down $2K. I tried to just chill and bet on football sunday, but that even sucked because the sportsbooks just arent on the level of the strip. I went to the Bellagio, and Mirage, and even hit a Massage parlor my last night and that night away from downtown was great and the most fun I had on my trip....Downtown never again.
Downtown isn't for everyone,I like the shorter walks from casino to casino and the fact there is not alot of people down there............
I like Downtown. Its not the Strip but I like it. I like the different crowd of people at night watching the bands on Fremont St. I like the fact that Binions has gone with younger prettier female dealers.
One other thing for $60 you can take a limo service and have a much nicer ride from the airport. The sportsbook at GN isnt too abd but I agree the rest of them are pretty old school.
I think your first mistake was staying at the El Cortez. If you are willing to blow $2k playing blackjack you can almost definitely get comped at a mid range strip hotel.
@Krusherlaw
For real. Downtown id for the liad back, easy going, like old style Vegas and cheaper prices.
It is not for the flashy and those who just want to be seen.
Weekend guy trip coming up 10/2. Late night $3 craps at the ElCo is a must.
How much is a rub and tug in Vegas?

Yappy will do it for a stake in the TI headhunters tourney.

Oh probably lol. I was just curious is all
I haven't been there in 4 months, but I agree the downtown poker scene is a drag. Binions is a bunch of grumpy old guys arguing. Golden Nugget was disappointing with "pretenders" thinking they could play. Fitzgeralds rarely got a game going. Plaza was even less likely to get a game going. El Cortez was probably the most fun, but I couldn't handle the small stakes or smoke. All-in-all I'd rather play anyplace else on the strip than downtown.
