Once in a lifetime pair of hands

I made it in on a Friday and played in the Paris tourney. I did not get much in the way of cards and that would be the theme of my trip. Early I got a pair of eights as a shorter stack. The flop as 9-7-4. I went all in and was called by the original bettor. He had trip nines, so I am as good as gone. I went runner, runner to make a straight and stay around but eventually lose outside of the money.

I either play NL tourneys or limit cash games. I am not good at NL cash (at least not on the internet or the one time I tried it in Vegas)so I don't play them very often. Plus I just have limit at home. So, we played limit at the IP. I played on Friday and lost to a poor set of players due mainly to lack of cards. I took Saturday off for the main purpose of the trip of betting on football and I saw Mystere and the mecca of AVP poker - the TI poker room, but I did not play.

Sunday night, after a horrific NFL day for me, we went to the Excalibur to try to play 2-6 spread for something different than what I normally play. They did not have a 2-6 game going and had a list for 2-4. Waited for fifteen minutes and then left. Played in the IP Sunday night bounty tourney. Did not get cards again and tripled up on my all in to get to the final table (only two tables to start with). Scraped along as a mid to short stack and made it to the final four with three spots paid. The blinds accelerated quickly - which I like so I don't spend forever at these things. Third stack went all in versus second stack with A2 vs. AK. Sure enough a two flopped and held up. Then I went all in from the blind with Q10 suited vs AK. The queen flopped but a ace on the river made me bubble boy.

Monday morning came and I played in the IP 2-4 cash game to get my aces or kings cracked from 8am to 11 am. At about 10:30 I got aces. Flopped an ace and then turned another one for quads. Got a high hand jackpot of $67 which was nice since we don't have that in Minnesota. Played the next hand while they got me my chips. Got a pair of sixes and the flop was 8-6-4 so I am pretty happy. Turn is a four for my full house and then the river is the fourth six. So, I make quads two hands in a row and get two high hand jackpots in a row both for $67. I have been playing for about three years maybe two or three times a month and I can only remember getting quads four times and then I get it back to back hands when I can get paid for it in Vegas rather than back at home. Has to be one in a million.

Played in the Monday night tourney at IP. It moved quickly and I was bounced when my JJ (the first pair of Jacks I got all trip) were beat on the river by a nine on the river making a three of a kind. I played again on Tuesday morning before going home but just lost a little.

In summary, I did not have much in the way of cards. I probably played for 12-15 hours and never got dealt kings or queens or tens. I got AK once, JJ once, and AA once so it was pretty rough. I am guessing the IP tourney is pretty easy money if you can get enough chips before the blinds really accelerate and you get lucky after that. I thought the IP was better this trip. It had a better, more fun atmosphere maybe due to the high hand promotions. The dealers seemed improved. Michael's table was always enjoyable to play at. I like the addition of the high hand (obviously) and the bad beat although it seems like the rake was plenty. I'll head back in November. Hopefully with better luck except for that five minute stretch.

  1. I have a new poker strategy--only play quads or better. Sounds like a fun trip, did you like Mystere? Saw it last winter, thought it was a great show. If you liked it, I highly recommend O and Ka for your next trips.

BTW, I think back to back quads with a jackpot bonus for each is not exactly a terrible run of luck. Perhaps you are setting your standards just a little bit high ... :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

  3. Mystere was pretty good. It kept my interest but I am probably good for a while on Cirque du Soleil shows.

I know I was extremely lucky for five minutes. Next trip, I'd like my luck spread out more rather than just concentrated in two hands. I got a ton of J3o and 85o and very few premium hands.
