Play the player not your cards !!!!!

Touched down in Vegas at 3PM after a disgusting 20 HOURS travelling from London (I will never take connecting flights again). Headed straight to the Wynn to unpack and out to eat.
After a great burger from Zoozacrackers decided to check out the poker room and wasn't disappointed, it was buzzing and there was about 8 people waiting for a 1/2NL seat. I have only ever played live poker once before last May when I stayed and the Luxor and won a 22 man tournament so of course I was brimming with confidence !!!!!!!

To be honest I was crapping myself as I had never played a cash game live before and after reading several books was worried about my tells etc as playing on stars I don't have to worry about that.
So I finally got a seat and bought in for $500 after pacing up and down for 25 minutes and watching repeat after repeat of the promo video for Le Reve and Danny Gans (RIP gutted he wasn't on while we was there). So I knew I was going to play the first hand no matter what I got and after posting out of position I looked down at that hand that every one loves, pocket deuces. Decided to raise $7 and picked up the blinds woo hoo im up - Not for long. Was pretty much card dead for 4 hours straight then it happened - total suck out and cost me eventually 2 days bankroll. I'm UTG and wake up with pocket Qs, I decide to smooth call and everyone folds until the SB who raises $25 kind of big for a $5 pot - BB calls I think for about 20 seconds decide im beat but as I have been so dead I want to see a flop and call. Flop comes Q 7 3 rainbow - Bingo, I check of course SB bets $25 again BB folds, now here is where my read was way off this guy had been playing so tight all night and I'm thinking now he must have Ks or As - WRONG !!!! - Turns a 8 no danger I lead out with $50 he instacalls river is a 7. Oh yes you can see what's coming I check he bets $50 (WHY DIDN'T I JUST CALL) I shove he smiles, calls and turns over pocket 7s GRRRRRR. He has me covered as I reach in my pocket and pull out another $500. After that I should have walked but 3 hands later had my As cracked by another river card for a flush draw to say I was steaming was an understatement. Anyway after losing that buy in I decided to lose $800 playing roulette which made me feel so much better and went up to sleep at 3am.

The next day couldn't be anymore different and even though I will describe this the best I can you wont be able to understand what this was like as well as the atmosphere at the table but ill do my best. After spending most the day at the premium outlets and getting a 24 seat Hummer back for only $25 I decided to rest up and go down to the poker room about 8pm.
After only a 10 Minute wait this time I got seated and bought in for $300. After about 20 minutes of getting 72 52 83 and the hand that seemed to be my favourite 94 all unsuited by the way I decided to play blind - now this might sound stupid but alot of people say to play the player not your cards and considering I wasn't getting anywhere with my cards I decided to try the other way. Gradually over the next couple of hours I started to get the image that I was hitting some pretty nice hands and at this stage some of my re-raises and table talk was really starting to get me somewhere, Don't get me wrong I wasn't going blind every hand maybe 5 out of 10 hands. 3 hours later after tripling my buy in I got spotted not looking at my whole cards but re-raising someone who had made it $20 to go. At this stage I looked at my cards (74 off) and decided what the hell lets gamble. The flop came 7 4 A which at this point I knew I had him - check check turn is a 4 (bingo) check check and the rivers K. He had AK The whole table now focusing on me was realising what I had been doing for the last couple of hours which now played into my hands even more as every time I called or raised they never knew where I was at. I continued to play this way for about 7 hours when some big hot shot who thought he was Johnny Chan sat down with more Full Tilt logos on his clothes than chips on the table. I didn't change the way I was playing it just seemed to be working making decisions about the player rather than the cards. Also I was really hitting the deck as well turning Pocket rockets a couple of times even hit a full house blind until the river when the guy went all in and had a busted flush draw and was fed up with me winning so many pots. Ill agree that most of you think I was just gambling but I was getting guys to fold decent hands just on the basis that I would tell them im blind but I was raising them $50 after the turn to see if there hand was worth that amount - half the time they didn't believe me and the other half thought they must be beat when really I hadn't even looked. Finally the table started to break up and after best part of nearly 10 hours play - my stack was so big and I was pretty drunk by this time I didn't have a clue where I was at, so the last hand was what capped the night off - 6 handed this guys say to me "dude you have had my number all night im going to raise you all in as im tired and want to go to bed". I asked the dealer for a count as everyone folded - He had $350 so I said to him id look at just one card and I would make the decision (BEING DRUNK AND UP) - So he picks the card for me and and its the As so I tell him its good and call still with no idea what I have - he shows KK and I ask him if he wants me to flip both and he says no just the one I looked at - I show and he's not happy saying I'm bound to hit a A on the board. The board fires 5 blanks and he stands there pi$$ed off and says "knowing my luck the other ones an A" - flip the other card and its an A - The rest of the table burst out laughing the guy shakes my hand and goes to bed. One of the guys from the poker room gave me a couple chip trays as I count up my monster stack - OMG final count $1960 - as you can imagine im over the moon and they guy says that's the biggest amount he has seen someone win 1/2NL for months which im happy about, finally went up to sleep at about 5:30am.

I didn't play or do much the next day as my stint from the night before caught up with me and ending off getting an early night (LOSER).

So after thinking I'm the next Daniel Negreanu me and Dad headed for the Freemont experience and we wasn't disappointed - As the Nugget is the home to HSP I wanted to play a couple hands in there so Dad watched the band and I headed for the poker room.

I got seated straight away and everyone seemed quite pleasant, I donked off $300 in about 20 minutes when my top 2 got busted by an open ender - never mind but then the real damage came. That table broke and I got moved to a table at the front and bought in for the max $500 - well that's what I thought, I didn't realise that there is no max buy in at the Nugget which should have put me off but hey im in Vegas im drinking and im playing poker give me another $500. So Im sat with my 1K next to a Chinese guy who is being really friendly to everyone I look down and he must have had at least 3K if not more.
So I do my usual and play super tight for 30 minutes to get a feel for the table and this Chinese guy is playing every hand and over betting anything and everything really really heavy (sounds like me 2 nights ago LOL). So I get dealt pocket 7s mid position call a small re-raise to $10 by UTG then Chinese guy raises to $100, UTG folds I think for a bit and I swear I knew exactly what he had it was weird it was like I could see through him. So figuring him on a AK I call - Flop comes K 7 2 - Great I check knowing he will bet and going to try and get my moneys worth - he bets $500 now I know he has top pair no point in just calling so I shove he istacalls with guess what AK no flush draw. Now the turn comes a 2 which I guess doesn't change anything he still needs a K to win and sure enough here it comes BAM !!!!

That totally screwed with me and I went on major tilt when I got back to the Wynn (and back to the safe) and blew another $500.

The following day after buying in for another $500 my top 2 got done on the river by by someone holding pocket Ks I decided it was time to leave poker and waste the rest of my money on Roulette.

Had a blast though !!!! Feel free to post feedback.

  1. I agree zerofan. Some of these TRs seem pretty insane and incredibly wacky. Overall it sounds like you had a good time ricky and I hope you win a little more the next time you come out.

  2. You guys are laughable, didn't your mama teach you anything :unamused: (Go do some reading, there are PLENTY of members that post about losing money, myself included)

    Good read, thanks for posting!

  3. @zerofan

    "Everyone" sure reads like "all"

If your gonna call someone "dummy", you may want to start with yourself.

  4. Wonderful report!

Okay. I am ashamed to admit it, but here is something I did. I actually lost about $1,000 my first day playing poker in Vegas a couple of years ago in 1/2 NL. (Don't tell my wife.) I made some real donkey plays and suffered some sick suckouts.

I decided to drown my sorrows with "free" drinks, so I sidled up to the Pai Gow poker table, not knowing what I was doing, but lusting after rum & cokes to sooth and numb my stupidity. I ordered my drink, somehow won my first $15 hand, and increased my bet. Long story short – I would ask the dealer for advice, push a lot of hands, then win another hand, increase my bet, and order another drink, then tip the dealer and the cocktail waitress.

It was quite a while later that I lost a BIG stack of chips, but that was my first and only loss, and by that time I was feeling no pain. I cashed in and discovered that I won about $800!

I played poker for the next four days and really grinded it out. I think I broke slightly above even, but it could have been slightly below even. Anyway, instead of winning all my money back at poker, I dumb-lucked my poker losses back at Pai Gow. Hey! I can Round that game!

  5. Guys n Gals I can understand that you might think im lying as it seems quite detailed but I have put down what I remember and also I know it sounds sad but everynight when I got back to the hotel room I scribbled a few notes down about some hands so I could remember and write this report. Trust me as drunk as I was some nights when you take a big hit you sober up pretty quickly, plus if you read it through I ended off losing in the end not winning ?????

Your a moron! Thanks for proving it! Post what you want I wont see it....dummy![/quote]

    * - 'your' = "you're"

    * - 'wont' = "won't"

Apologies in advance if YOUR apostrophe key on your keyboard is broken. If so, there's a guy named Vince in LV who can hook you up with something better. Ask TBC for details.

Congrats on spelling 'moron' correctly, however.

  7. I love that "moran" guy. That picture never gets old after all these years.

Great TR Ricky. Glad you enjoyed your trip across the pond even if it wasn't profitable. If you can bankroll it - no one should criticize you for having a good time on your vacation. The experience at the tables will most likely set you up for some key +EV situations next time out of you want to improve your poker luck.

  8. @rickyc

Not shoving with top full house is severe - EV. No one can read that good. Not even Negraneau with second full house versus Hansen's quads. (on HSP a few seasons ago)

Agreed. Don't beat yourself up over this one; write it off as a massive cooler.

  10. I enjoyed your report. despite what zerofan wrote, I appreciate your humility in sharing both the ups and downs of your report. I don't get to travel to Las Vegas very often, but when I do I take constant notes on my blackberry about hands including actual cards and bet amounts so that I can share the stories later. It might be one of the few things I enjoy writing about.

    cheers!

  11. I think the mods need to step in here and ban zerofan...totally uncalled for.

  12. Wow :flushed: saucer of milk table 5 !!!!!

  13. @rickyc
Okay, maybe I'm the idiot. I don't get it.

    Thank you!

  15. Nice TR, however please help me with this last hand. Am I reading this incorrectly?
You had pocket 7's and he had AK? The flop: K 7 2 rainbow. What did he hit on the river to beat you? A king on the river would have given you 7's full against his set of K's. Were you just too drunk and surrendered your hand, or am I missing something here?
Please do not take offense at my statements. I am just wondering about this.

  16. @Beaureguarde

The way I read it, the turn was a 2, so it would have been KKK22 vs 777KK?

  17. Thanks. Just reread it and caught my mistake. :open_mouth:
