Sam's Town, January 2005
The Sam's Town poker room was comfortable and friendly. I played 4,8 Texas Holdem, sometimes with a half kill, sometimes without. Some half kill games would start as half kill games - but if everyone at a table agreed, then a non-kill game could be changed to a half kill game. They did not have any full kill games.
The room also offers 7Stud. When I was there it was going almost all the time; possibly because of the Bad-Beat Jackpot. But there did appear to be many regular 7Stud players.
Though they had Omaha listed on their sign, there wasn't a game any of the days I was there.
When I was there they had both a Bad-Beat Jackpot and a High-Hand Jackpot. It was my understanding that they were going to discontinue the Bad-Beat Jackpot after it was won. Then just have a High-Hand Jackpot.
The High Hand Jackpot paid $100 for Aces full and Quads; $300 for Straight Flushes; $500 for Royal Flushes; and more for some specific straight flushes that were listed on a sign.
The staff was very good. All the dealers seemed to be experienced and freindly. Some had dealt there for many years. Cocktail service was fast. Some of the waitresses were good looking, some weren't.
The players were mostly locals. Quite a few of the out of towners were players who had played there on previous trips. But there were also a few out of towners and new players who didn't know too much about poker.
A coupon for a free food at the lunch counter just outside the poker room is free for the asking, but you do need to ask, and it's not advertised. You can eat while playing.
The sports book is just outside the poker room.
If you were on the waiting list but not in the poker room, they anounced when you were up for a game over the public address system in the casino.
They have 6 or 7 tables. Usually had 3 to 5 tables up and going during the afternoon, early evening.
Over all, I'd say it ia a well run, friendly, laid back poker room. Mostly local players but a reasonable number of out of towners and novice players.
