Solo February Trip
Took a solo trip to Vegas February 20 - 26. This was about the 8th trip I've taken to Vegas over the last 8 years but the 1st since Nov '09. I live in poker hell AKA Charleston, SC so I was really stoked leading up to this trip. Unfortunately I didn't write down any hand histories but did keep a log of where I played and results - hope you enjoy.
Arrived in LV on Monday, Feb 20th mid afternoon and caught a shuttle to Imperial Palace. There was a super long line to checkin but thankfully moved pretty quick. I've stayed here before and really can't complain as it's perfectly located and cost me a whopping $45 total for 6 nights.
Walked over to Harrah's and played 1-2NL for about 8 1/2 hours with +164 profit. Nothing really stands out too much about this session. Called it quits about 1:30 am (had been up for about 24 straight hours).
Tues, 2/21 - Made my way down to the Venetian. In the past this has been my favorite place to play but would be the only time I played there this trip. Played 1-2NL for 13 hours without ever really playing a big pot. Had hoped to pick up a little profit then move over to a 2-5 table but never got there. Left at 10 pm down -136. Decide to stop off at Harrah's on the way back which turned out to be a very good decision. Played for a little over an hour, got dealt AA 3x with all 3 holding up for a +551 profit. Decided to turn in as I planned to head down to check out the Aria and possibly play in their 1 pm tourney.
Wed, 2/22 - Got to the Aria around 9:30 am and there was only one 1/3 NL game going with a wait list. Sat around reading a Cardplayer magazine until I got sat at about 11. Registered for the tourney in the meantime too. Played for about 2 hours leading up to it and lost -45. Luckily I would more than make up for this in the next 8 hrs. Ended up being 77 runners in the tourney, paying top 7. I've never really had much success in LV tournies (only one cash several years ago at Bally's) but found myself very relaxed and pretty much staying out of trouble. Had a huge double up with 2 tables left when my KK held up against AK. We got to the final table of 9 and I was in 5th or so position. It then took us almost 2 levels to get down to 8. We all put $20 in an envelope to pay the bubble which turned out to not be necessary. Played another level and a half with the short stack doubling up about 5 times including AA being cracked. The blinds were now getting ready to go to the 16th level - 8K-16K w/ a 2K ante. The average chip stack was somewhere around 90K with no real separation between us all. Needless to say we ended up chopping it 8 ways after getting management to work the paperwork out. $935 each for +808 profit.
Left Aria and wandered across the street to Planet Hollywood. Stayed there at a very loose and wild 1-2 NL table for the next 12 hours. There were a couple of very drunk and funny young Brits and throughout the night a couple of the bitchiest women I've ever played with. My stack went from down a couple hundred to up about $150 to ultimately being down -295. In hindsight I should have left about 5 hours earlier.
Thurs, 2/23 - Played from 3:30-9:30 pm at the Flamingo. Can't say that I liked this room too much. Bunch of older people talking about getting hours in for freeroll tourney. Left down -223. Walked over to Caesars and played 1-3NL for a little over 4 hours. Left up +322. I really wanted to stay as my table got broken and the new table I was moved to had a guy spewing chips. After about 30 minutes, however, it became obvious that 3 people at the other end of the table were together and discussing every hand. The dealer and floor both became involved and things just got too tense so decided to call it a night around 2:30 am.
Fri, 2/24 - Went back over to Caesar's. Played 1-3 NL waiting for the noon $130 Winter Classic event. In the hour or so playing I flopped quad Aces for a $100 bonus then got dealt pocket Kings on the next hand. Ended up folding on the turn to a bunch of action with 3 clubs on the board - I did have the K of clubs. Really felt that I was drawing dead. Needless to say a 4th club on river would have shipped me about an $800 pot as the 3 allins had a set, 2 pair and a baby flush. This set me a little on tilt and probably led to an earlier exit from the noon tourney as I ended up overplaying QQ and ran into a set on a ten high flop. Decided to play the 4pm deepstack turbo event and got knocked out in 22nd place out of 85 or so. Early on there was a decent amount of play but the blinds got up there pretty quick with only 15 minute levels.
Walked back over to Harrahs and played for about 6 hours losing -10.
Sat 2/25 - Spent the last day in Harrahs. By this time I was actually a little worn down and I hate to admit it ready to head home. Played 1-2 NL for about 7 hours and lost -320. Didn't feel like I was playing very well and contemplated calling it quit for the trip. Decided instead to play in the 8 pm $80 bounty tournament. 43 players. Doubled up 2x early on with AA which helped me cruise into the final table. Picked up 4 $20 bounties along the way which covered the buyin. Ultimately ended up busting in 3rd when I lost 2 straight preflop allins with A7o vs. King high. Netted +250 after leaving a tip for dealers.
Shuttle was picking me up at 4:30 am for my 7 am flight back home so I killed an hour or so playing BJ at IP. Ended up dead even.
All in all I ended up ahead about $800. Real pleased with my tournament results and a little disappointed with cash games. Unfortunately with the lack of a local poker room I felt that I needed to get as much action in as humanly possible and probably played a few sessions when I was not at my best.
Hope to be back in less than 2 years next time.
The Carolina poker scene is virtually nonexistent. Moved to Charlotte just before black Friday. Enjoyed the report.
