Tilt Help
One of my best buddies is a great player but he goes on tilt like no one I've ever seen. I've tried to give him advice but he's having none of it. Are there some sneaky tricks I can use to help him out with it being obvious I'm trying to bring him back from the Crazy Train???
Yeah, videotape the guy making a schmuck out of himself, post it on YouTube and let him see it for himself. I'd watch!
Jedi mind tricks? Not much you can do for someone not willing to see their problem.
You might try to slip him a copy of The Poker Mindset by Hilger and Taylor. Deals with the subject very well.
Guys who won't recognize their mistakes are tough. If you're seeing a pattern, you might want to start documenting them. When your buddy is ready to really listen, you'll know it. Of course, I've also found the way to beat someone like that is just absolutely go apesh*t on them. Tell them how disappointed you are seeing them keeping wasting their talent by being an idiot and you can't take it anymore. Sometimes with guys like that, hitting with a brick is the only option.
You know what would be really good? Put him on tilt yourself and clean him out. Torture him at the table for a couple sessions and then tell him what you did. He may be pissed early on but if he's truly a friend he'll get it. If not, honestly just don't worry about it. You'll start messing your own game up worrying about his.
I see the conversation going something like this....
You could try the Crash Davis method and tell everyone at the table what sets him off and set him up one time. Might be a good learning tool!
"I used to really respect your game but now I know I'm better than you because of the way you always blow up. I'm going to call you Ol' Faithful from now on because you explode right on schedule. Get it together, will you?"
Yeah, he's going to have to learn it on his own if he's that bad. You can tell someone something obvious until they're blue in the face but if they can't see it, it won't help. I guess just be there when you start to see it and step in so it doesn't get worse.
Hold on to his money....and his ATM card!
Maybe some flute lessons?
Um...no. It's up to him to figure it out. If he won't listen, he's a blow-up machine and just let him go until he gets a clue.
