This club is taking a $1/hand promo rake to fund jackpots and raffles. I spoke with the owner about why I felt it was illegal (as someone who has read the penal code statute) as defined in section 47.06 which clearly states: a person involved in the gambling does not receive any economic benefit other than personal winnings; and except for the advantage of skill or luck, the chance of winning is the same for all participants.
Given the these promotions are an economic benefit which do not come from personal winnings, I see no way taking this rake can be legal. It's disappointing to see a club where safe LEGAL poker can be played is in fact not operating legally. Despite the claim the club takes nothing out of the promotional fund, all too often these clubs will go out of business and owners pocket the player funds, allowing for theft of tens of thousands of dollars.
Other than this illegal rake, this club has promise. The tables are nice, amenities are decent, and location feels fairly safe. I hope Johny's will reconsider their promotional rake and become compliant with Texas law.

Thank you for your review we thrive to improve our room, however I do feel the need to correct one thing.
Our room take a bad beat jackpot dollar which is the dollar you speak of. It goes back to the players in the form of a bad beat. Literally every room in the US does this promotion and it is completely legal because the house isn’t taking any part of it. 100 percent of it goes back to the players. Thank you for the kind words and I wish you had voiced your concerns better while you were visiting our room so we could have better explained the promo to you.
