First time Playing Poker in Vegas - Novice Perspective
Day one: Arrived at IP (where we were staying) around 2pm. Dropped off bags and immediately went downstairs to play. Lost my 40 in chips w/in an hour or so trying to get a feel for the table/room. But I learned a lot. Played 2/4 Limit.
Went to the Stratosphere and lost 20 bucks there on 2/4 Limit, too, so went back to IP. Played there with some decent hands and walked a way making up for the 60 I had lost earlier that day plus some.
Day two: Woke up in time to make the 9am tourney at the Strat (which is now a 25+5 buy-in). Made it to the final table as low chip stack and went all in on A8c praying for a miracle. Was called by one person with pocket 4's. Caught my flush on the river, but it was the 4 of clubs, so naturally he made a full house to knock me out in 4th place (the last place that doesn't pay). One old ass at the table refused a 4-way chop. I didn't stick around to see if he won or not.
Stopped at the Sahara after that and couldn't find the poker room, lost 40 bucks in Blackjack in about 10 minutes, so I just gave up and left.
Back at IP I sat down about Noon with 20 bucks and walked about 5 hours later with 150. Only left for dinner and went straight back to the IP. THIS IS WHERE IT GETS GOOD. I returned in time to open a new table. All of us were "tourists" and between 21 and 40. Bought in for 50 and I was ON FIRE!!! I was hitting EVERY hand I played, never saw a river I didn't win. Got dealt pocket kings and got one caller on my pre-flop raise. (I'm still really sorry I took all your money Donnie!) K-K-X came out on the flop, I have no clue what all the other cards that came out were, I just bet the hell out of my quads. By the end he knew I had them, but played anyway. Carole the dealer got a big tip on that one. Had a kid next to me who bought in for 100 and after chatting awhile with him, I found out he was playing on a tight system. He folded all but about 2 hands in 4-5 hours. The one he finally raised preflop on was AQ hearts. Unfortunatly for him I was dealt pocket 10's and he played me all the way to the river. He caught nothing and I won with two pair. Sorry, Andrew. By 6 am, I had about 350 in front of me which the dealers were affectionally calling the Great Wall of China. We had a 21 year old fall asleep at the table, which was hillarious. The guy to the right of me most of the night (looked exactly like Tom Brady from what the guys were telling me) was so drunk he lost pretty much every hand, which worked out well for me. By 7am (11.5hours for me at the same table) no one would play with me.
Decided to call it a night.
Day 3: Back to the tables after 6 hours sleep at about 2pm. Continued to lose most of the 350 I won the night/morning before, but had a lot of fun. Met several locals that evening that were friendly. Lost my 60 buy-in after about 4 hours. Was down to my last 2 bucks once and went all-in in the blind for the hell of it. Got dealt pocket aces (go figure). Ended up winning a six dollar pot. How pathetic for me. Lost that six bucks on the next hand.
Moved to a differnt table where all my "poker buddies" from the night before were playing and played about 4 hours on 50 bucks. Gave up after losing that and decided to try a differnt poker room.
DAY 4: Never slept after Day 3 really. Just left the IP at about 5am and walked over to Harrah's. The only action was 4 people at a 3/6, so my friend and I joined it for 90 buck buy-in. I've never see so many bad beats in my life. Got 10-3 unsuited on the big blind and one caller. Flop came J-10-3. So I bet the minimum all the way to the end (can't remember the turn/river cards). Lost to J-3 held by the small blind. Go figure. I was landing AQ suited, KQ suited, pocket 2's, 4's, and 10's. All in one hour's time. Only one one pot with a pair of Kings. Horrible time.
My friend was in a $300+ pot all-in with two other players and it was a fight to the finish with a board reading 9-10-J-Q-4. She was holding pocket Kings we later found out, another guy, pocket Aces, and both lost to AK. The guy that took that pot was on our plane on the way back, so funny. Harrah's room is very clean, crisp and well ran (at least at 5am), but FREEZING! A young dealer from IP was there after her shift getting trashed and playing no limit with a bunch of friends, probably all other dealers.
Went back to the room, decided it wasn't worth going to bed at 6am when our plane was leaving later that day, so ordered room svc, showered, and headed back down to IP tables. Never did any better there.
Ventured over to the Orleans about 5 hours before our plane left. My streak started again and I was getting fabulous cards dealt to me and great flops, starting winning tons of hands, again, people quit playing with me. This place was full of elderly locals that seemed pissed off at the young crowd. (I have to tell you that at 29 I don't consider myself young and am not on the WSOP poker kick from TV, I've been playing 7-card since I was 3, practically raised by my great aunt who taught me everything I know about poker). The old man next to me kept slamming his hand down on the table when he would check so my chips stacks would fall over. One old lady changed positions to play behind me instead of in front of me after telling her husband I was playing bad. So what if she tought I was, I was taking all her money. It didn't help her to move, it just made her call me more. The asian guy next to me continue to yell at me for playing a hand wrong and not raising when I should have. I was just being cautious.
Anyway, dragged myself away from the Orleans with about an hour to spare to hit the plane back to Indy.
Was a fun trip and while I didn't end up ahead, I learned A LOT.
