The background of this $300k super-freeroll is that it is populated by players from all the Las Vegas-area Stations' cardrooms that (in this case) logged 50 hours live playing time between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31. Approximately 2800 players qualified but there is always a number of no-shows. At my Day 1 session (there are 4) there were about 54 ten-handed tables. Each session played down to 100 players, and those players came back at noon on Day 2 to battle for the big money (1st place = $40K). Any player showing up for the tournament got at least $75 and a hat. Obviously a tight-conservative strategy would normally be appropriate because the chip stacks were not carried over to Day 2 (altho' there were awards of $300 for each of the Day 1 sessions for five largest chipstacks). However, this was not a deep-stack tournament but a short-stack tournament ($700 in starting chips, ugh!). Blinds started at $25-$25 and 15 minute levels of limit hold 'em, limit omaha high and no-limit hold 'em. Just to be cruel the limit levels (3) were played first before going to no-limit. Your first big hand in this push-fest many times determines your fate. My A-Q spiked a Q on the flop in limit hold 'em and held up and I essentially sat out Omaha and the final level of limit. I had 600 chips heading into NL and caught a couple of big pockets and stole and nursed my way to Sunday's Day 2.//Everyone on Sunday got at least $200, with $500 going to 31-50 and $800-21-30, etc. Big money at the final table. Same 700 starting chips with an additional level of limit holdem added for more enjoyment. Didn't make a hand until the third level (25-50 limit HE with 475 chips). Some chips had been burned off in Omaha and I missed a nut straight when I decided to save 100 rather than draw. My game finally got untracked with my customary big cards and I was at 4100 as we went to NL. With about 55 people left, I opted to fold AKo vs. slightly smaller raiser to guarantee the $500 payday (but he showed me A8s ouch!). With 49 players to go and the BB 2 spots away from crippling my stack, I made my move for the Top 30 with A7. Due to my Stations' image everyone folded to SB who called with KQ. Heads-up I spiked a 7, and made it as far as the river King. At which point, I collected my $500 and hat. I've noted all the Stations on the review, because anyone playing at any Las Vegas Stations cardroom can qualify (assuming another such freeroll in the future). BTW, this was not my best finish in this tournament. Many moons ago, when the tournament was played upstairs at Palace Station (it is now played at Texas Station), I finished 20th for $1k. Hope this satisfies everyone's curiousity.
