Vegas Trip January 6-9 - CES Time
Just got back from Vegas yesterday after playing almost non-stop hold'em for the last 2.5 days. I played around 24.5 hours total (I kept track of
everything). It was really crazy at times and things were very streaky.
Most of the players weren't the best except for places like the Bellagio where they were very solid. It was much easier to lose at limit versus
no-limit since the blinds were low enough for most people to stay in until the end unless they had absolutely nothing (which also happened quite a bit).
Here's a somewhat brief recap of events:
Day 1 - 1/6/05
Mandalay Bay - 2.5 hours
$4/$8 Limit
Won $134 off of mostly fish.
Mandalay Bay - 1.75 hours
No-Limit Tournament
13th out of 30th. Got no cards and blinds raised very quickly.
Aladdin - 0.75 hours
$2/$4 and $3/$6 Limit
Won $2 playing before dinner.
Harrah's - 3.75 hours
$4/$8 Limit
Bad beat city!!!! Flopped a straight and kept re-reraising like no tomorrow and lost $200 pot to jerk from California who caught full house on
river. He was talking smack when he showed it and I was so shocked I was speechless because I felt like telling him he had no manners. No cards
after that.
Day 2 - 1/7/05
Binion's Horseshoe - 1.5 hours
No Limit Tournament
Finished 92 out of 130. No cards for whole tournament and players were ultra-aggressive. Friend Kenny made it to 23rd place.
Binion's Horseshoe - 1.25 hours
$4/$8 Limit
Killed time while friend was still in tournament. Made $36.
Bally's - 3.5 hours
$1/$2 No Limit
Good players but managed a few huge pots ($200+) on full house and quad 4's. Made $190.
Day 3 - 1/8/05 - Crazy stuff going on.
Bellagio - 2.5 hours
$2/$5 No Limit
Players were very good and very aggressive. Didn't get any good starting hands for first 2 hours then got quad Jacks and trip 10's to net $142.
Aladdin - 2.5 hours
$1/$2 No Limit
I hate this place. No good starting cards the whole time I played and got blinded out. Will not go back. Some players made it very expensive to
see a flop with $15-$20 raises which made my hands such as Ace/2 offsuit unplayable. Lost 2 x $100 max buy-in and left in disgust.
Harrah's - 4.25 hours
$2/$4 Limit
I was tired (it was midnight LV time) and not completely alert so I decided to play limit instead of no-limit. I also decided to use my $1 chip I
took from Binion's as a lucky card cover. Well it sort of worked, I got great cards but couldn't win a lot of money since the blinds were low and
people could stay in a hand chasing heir draw. I hadn't been getting any high pairs, but once I started using the card cover from Binion's I got
pocket Aces 3 TIMES IN ONE HOUR!!! The bad part was I only netted $20 on all three hands (I only won 2)!!!!!!! Jerks kept drawing out on me because
they would all check to me and then no one would raise which made it cheap for everyone to continue even though they knew I had something since I
raised before the flop (6 people stayed in on one of the hands!!). My pocket Queens didn't hold up, in fact, in limit you should go in with any
ace because I won more hands this way than pocket pairs or suited connectors etc. Had pocket 10s once and was drawing dead against another
player with pocket Queen's since the only other player in the hand also had pocket 10s. Lost $75 in a session where I finally had good starting
hands.
After all of this I now know that prefer either higher limit, limit games or no-limit games with a reasonable buy-in. You get drawn out on at the lower limit tables. All in all I ended the trip ahead by about $140 so I can't be too frustrated, but I had so many bad beats that I stopped
getting excited about my starting hands. It was fun, but playing until 4:30am LV time can really takes its toll on you by the last day but I managed to sleep on the plane and go to bed at 9pm yesterday.
I would recommend Bally's, Bellagio and Binion's as places to go with decent players. If you want fish and are willing to get a lot of bad beats
then go to Harrah's and Imperial Palace. Mandalay Bay was nice but the players weren't fantastic, but I still managed to win there.
